Soup Restaurant @ Changi Airport

Soup Restaurant @ Changi Airport (Score: 4 out of 5)

So we went to the airport to see mama and papa off. We had a few choices lide Crystal Jade or Seafood Paradise but we decided to go to Soup Restaurant. I think I've eaten in their branch in Suntec, but I don't really remember what I had and whether it was good or not.

Soup Restaurant specializes in Chinese soups but their skilled kitchen staff doesn't stop there.

The Restaurant

If you are in Changi Airport and looking for good food, give soup restaurant a try and you won't be disappointed.

Our Orders

Samsui Ginger Chicken - $15.90

Looks like any ordinary white chicken right? Trust me if Soup Restaurant's only branch was in Changi Airport then I will go here just to have my white chicken fix. The chicken was soft and tender almost buttery. It was also cut very nice and I didn't even see any bone of sorts. The ginger sauce at the middle is very good.

Teochew Olive Rice - $8.80

This is the first time that I have tried olive rice. This will not be the last time I will have olive rice. I'm a rice lover and I LOVE this rice. I'm not sure if the other dishes became better because of this but this is very very good. Hope I can find a recipe and try it at home.

Diced Mushroom with Beancurd and Brocolli - $12.90

Meaty mushroom, brocolli and beancurd. There was nothing special about the taste of the dish but I'm a sucker for good mushroom and this one had good meaty mushrooms.

Fried San yu with Ginger - $10.90

I liked this fish though I found it just a tad bit too oily. Everything in this dish was nice though and I saw myself even eating the ginger and garlic stalks.

Boiled Soup of the Day

Our soup was a basic soup made from Pork Bone and Wintermelon. If you haven't tried wintermelon then I will invite you to try this so that you become a lover of wintermelon. Marc when you visit us, i'll bring you to this place.

Unfortunately the soup of the day does change so hopefully you'll be able to time it right that this is available.

Price and Value

We paid $90.00 with everything above and 4 orders of cold barley. That makes it roughly $23.00 per head. I'd spend this money again in Soup Restaurant as long as they maintain the quality of food that I had today.

You must try the olive rice. You must try the white chicken. You must try them together.

Dian Xiao Er @ Vivo City

Dian Xiao Er @ Vivo City (Score: 4 out of 5)

So Mama Lita wanted to treat us for dinner and we were in Vivo City. We decided to go to Dian Xiao Er. We've eaten here before but it's been some time already. The deco inside will remind you of those ancient kung-fu movies with bad dubbings but the food is nothing like that. Thankfully we also arrived not a minute later as the line would have been very long if we did.

Our Orders

Sauteed Lettuce - $12.60

Sometimes it really amazes me how simple ingredients can make absolutely impressive dishes. Take this dish for example, its braised lettuce with garlic in a Chinese style - soybean based sauce. The picture may not do it justice but trust me this is very good.

Hotplate Tofu - $ 10.90

Very hotplate + tofu + egg + minced pork. If you can prepare this the same way as they do then good for you but I'm coming back here to have this again.

Ten Wonder Duck - $25.30

This is the hot seller in Dian Xiao Er. I think every table will order at least a small portion of this. Served with their special sauce the duck was perfectly cooked and the sauce just made the duck taste a lot better too. We ordered some steamed Chinese buns and dipped it in that nice rich sauce... I'd recommend you do the same.

Old-Style Fish - $18.30

We actually thought that they forgot about serving this dish as it took them a loooong time to serve it. Lucky for us that we didn't cancel this as this almost stole the duck's place as the star of the show. I'm not sure if they used seabass for the fish but if not then their chef is a god. The fish was flaky and the sauce just taste right. This is a must-have here.

Price and Value

We paid $86.00 for everything which makes it about $21.00+ per person. It was just the right amount of food for everyone. Maybe some people may see $25.00 for half a duck to be expensive but when you are served all of the food that we had together, the experience more than makes up for it.

Imperial Treasure Teochew Cuisine @ Ngee Ann City

Imperial Treasure Teochew Cuisine @ Ngee Ann City (Score: 4 out of 5)

So, I had the in-laws visiting this weekend and as usual we went around Singapore to have good food. First stop was Imperial Treasure.

This was the second time that I have visited this place and the first time was more than a year ago. I don't really remember what we ate that time but I will never forget this place again. The food was very good with a few hiccups.

Our Orders

Teochew Dumpling - $3.60

Maybe I got to the table a bit late and that is why I didn't enjoy this much as it was a bit cold already. But even if it was hot I don't see myself getting wowed by it.

Traditional Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Pork - $4.80

This is a special Glutinous Rice Dumpling only available around this time in Singapore. Wifey likes it very much because of the combination of the braised pork, yellow bean, salted egg, and sticky rice. If this is one of your favorite dishes, I'm sure you'll love this one.

Dried Scallop Dumpling Soup - $7.00

My favorite dish of the day. I really really love this soup. The skin of the wanton is soft enough to cut with a Chinese soup spoon and the balance of the season is spot on. Just add a little of Chinese vinegar to enhance the flavor and you are all set.

Homemade Fried Vermicelli - $14.00

Another mediocre dish which was quite expensive. Nothing really wrong with it but nothing special as well.

Pan-fried Carrot Cake - $4.20

Nothing special here. I wished they can do something different with Carrot Cake in this restaurant.

Chicken feet - $3.60

The simplest of food when done right is impressive. You'd think that different restaurants can cook chicken feet pretty well but I have to admit that Imperial's is one of the best I've had.

Marinated Goose Web - $18.00

Served with some tofu at the bottom, this was a good dish but I'm not a big fan of goose so I'll skip this during the next visit.

BBQ Pork Pastry - $4.20

This is becoming a fast and popular dish in Singapore given that Tim Ho Wan is in town already. Wifey and I are split on this. I think the dough of Tim Ho Wan is better but the BBQ Pork inside is better here. It is still a must have at $4.20.

Soft Malay Cake - $3.50

Malay cake is normally nothing special but this Malay cake was very soft and beats any butter sponge cake that I have tried. If you are a fan of Malay cake, you will definitely like this one.

Steamed Custard Pao - $4.20

Open in the middle, smell the salted egg custard, let cool a little, and enjoy a small piece of heaven.

Traditional Roasted Pork - $10.00

Very thin layer of fat, nicely layered meat, crunchy skin. Just place a little bit of mustard to give a little bit of heat. Very good in general.

Price and Value

For a party of 4, we paid $157.00 so that is about $40.00 per head. There are some dishes that I think were too expensive and didn't justify the price (goose web and fried vermicelli). But the other dishes more than made up for it especially the Dried Scallop Soup and Chicken Feet which were my two favorite during this visit.

Sushi Express @ 313 Somerset

Sushi Express @ 313 Somerset (Score: 3.5 out of 5)

After a so so lunch @ CoCo Ichibanya and having a nice massage plus some other Sunday activities, we decided to have a "snack" @ Sushi Express. It really caught our attention earlier as there was a long line and they were having a promo of $1.00 per dish in their conveyor belt.

The Restaurant

What you don't see here is that there is another line to the right with about 20-25 people.

With a $1.00 price yes I love Sushi too.

Once you are seated, you are given this ticket. It basically tells you that you have a 50 min limit in your seat.

Conveyor belt of goodies.

Our Orders (More of Highlights)

Mock Abalone

Sweet Shrimp

Not sure what this is but it was good.

Scallop

Sea Eel

Swordfish

Surf Clam

We were quite satisfied with the sushi that we had. We would prefer if more sashimi was served though. In general the food was fresh and the conveyor belt always had a good variety on it. You'll need to wait for a few mins for the top sellers like salmon sashimi or the scallop but once they are served, they do give enough.

Not all the dishes were worth $1.00 but there are items like the scallop, sea eel, shrimp, and abalone which are winners.

Price and Value

With all the ++ we paid $14.00. Normal price will be $1.50 after the promo which is still not a bad deal. Hot tea is already included and Japanese ginger is also free.
